Players are given free reign to decorate a room and make it as comfortable as possible for their pet tea dogs and tea cats. Players can create their own dog and cat pets using the detailed character creator, and share their pets with other players using a passcode. Pets can also be imported from the GBA games Ochaken no Yume Bouken and Ochaken no Boukenjima: Honwaka Yume no Island using their password systems.
Players can earn clothes, items, and in-game money by playing its 36 builtin minigames; this includes the 18 minigames from Ochaken no Heya DS and 18 new games.

Ochaken no Heya 3 is an entry in MTO's series of virtual pet games based the Sega Toys line that features adorable cats and dogs with tea leaves for ears. This entry takes the ochaken and ochaneko to a beach house, which players can decorate as they please. Players can also travel to the beach to hang out, or visit a number of other nearby locations. There are 28 different ochaken and ochaneko, and players can also create their own custom characters which can be shared with other players using the DS's wireless functions. Players can earn furniture and money by playing the 36 different minigames, and can also create new furniture items using the new farming system.

Ochaken no Heya DS 4 is a virtual pet game based on the Sega Toys line that features cute dogs and cats with tea leaves for ears. It features 32 ochaken and ochaneko, including for the first time the shinchaken mini-dogs Midori, Ruu, and Fan, and a newly-designed shinchaken named Sora. This entry takes place in a new theme park setting, Ochaken Land, with fantastical new minigames and theme park-inspired amenities. The player's room, where the ochaken and ochaneko live, also has more outlandish decorations available based on things located in the park.
