Blitz! This is an American football simulator. Each player (in which the game supports two-player mode simultaneously) controls one member of their team on offense and defense, and the main goal is to move the ball up the field to reach the opponent's end zone. This is done with a series of "drops", with four drops available to move the ball ten yards forward. If the player fails to achieve this, the ball goes to the opponent's attack. A player may also score by choosing to attempt to hit the ball between the opponent's goal (which is called a field goal and is worth less points than a touchdown).

On offense, the player controls the tackle (which must be done within 30 seconds of the formation of the connections) and then the defender, who can either run with the ball himself or pass it to a teammate by "pointing" the joystick towards the receiving player who the player will then get control to run around with the ball.

Defensively, the player controls one defender who runs faster than any of his teammates and is thus the most capable of handling the opponent's ball.

Players may be penalized and may be moved back five yards by either delaying play (not snapping for 30 seconds) or going offside (crossing the line of scrimmage when the ball is tackled).

A statistics screen is displayed after each game, listing items such as the number of first falls and the total number of shots and yards passed for each team.

  • Blitz! was one of two sports games originally released for Vectrex. Another game is the Heads Up football game.
  • Blitz in Europe! was subtitled American Football, in the US the subtitle was Action Football (perhaps a licensing issue at the time?). It was not available in Japan.
  • The game was programmed by Jeff Corsiglia in 1982.
  • There is a "self-play" mode that is activated if the player does not start the game manually. The game plays on its own, but the player still has limited control over the player's movement using the joystick.
  • The single player mode is more like a practice mode in which the player only plays offensively - when Vectrex gains control of the ball, he will always either hit or try to reach the goal.
