Game Cosmic Chasm (Vectrex - vect)
Cosmic Chasm

The player controls a spaceship armed with lasers and shields on a mission to destroy the space station "Space Chasm" from the inside. Each space station room has defensive ships that attack the player directly, and a center that expands slowly, forcing the player not to stay in the room for too long after defeating the defending ships. The player must shoot off the force fields that protect the exits in order to get through the corridors leading to other rooms. Each exit corresponds to a different direction on the map, so taking the shortest route is key. The goal is to break into the station's reactor room, destroy it, and get out of the station before the station is destroyed and the player is destroyed along with it. Touching the walls of rooms is just as fatal like touching a protective vessel or an expanding center. The screen has a part of the map on top so the player can keep track of which room they are in and also plan their escape from the station. The home version is mostly similar, but has some notable differences from the arcade version.

The Vectrex Cosmic Chasm version is slightly different from the arcade version. Since the Vectrex version was created earlier, it must be assumed that this is the original version. In the Vectrex version, the player controls a drilling machine that not only has lasers and screens, but also a drill bit that must be used to penetrate and nullify force fields blocking exits. Rooms still have defensive ships, expanding central cores to fill the entire room. The Vectrex version also has a map, but it is not permanently displayed at the top of the screen like the arcade versions. This is a separate screen that appears before the start of each round of the game or when the player leaves the room. In addition, to destroy the reactor, you need to support their vehicle next to the reactor and drop the bomb, which will explode after a set period of time, allowing you to make your escape. Finally, since this is a Vectrex game, it only has a monochrome vector display.

  • It was the last color vector game released by Cinematronics, which was in Chapter 11 bankruptcy at the time. Other games have been developed but not released.
  • It was the first game originally developed for a home gaming system and turned into an arcade game.
  • The game was often mistaken for Dragon's Lair due to it being like a three-sided marquee and both of them being in the same closet.
