It's been two years since the second King Of Fighters tournament took place. Now Terry, Andy, Joe, Mai and Geese are back in South City to fight five new characters and three bosses. They all have their own reasons for coming to South City, but in the end, everything is connected to a scroll that reveals the secret of the lost ancient martial arts. Fatal Fury 3 was a pretty big improvement over its predecessors, introducing brand new redrawn character sprites (once again) and improving overall animation quality. Of course, several new colorful characters join the list, in addition to the new 2D environments. The two-aircraft gameplay has been upgraded to a three-aircraft format known as the Oversway System. Players fight mostly in the middle or main plane, but may move or "cross" any of the oscillation lines in the background or foreground. Plane-to-aircraft attacks are back, but are now called "Roadside Attacks" and players can use special vehicles to defend these attacks. Other new gameplay elements include air blocking, combo arts, new special and super moves, and even alternate (more powerful) super moves that can only be used once per round. Along with a cool world map, Fatal Fury 3 also has a ranking system in the fight against the computer, which brought some innovation in the fighting game genre. When a player wins a round, they will be ranked from D to triple S. The ultimate opponents the player faces at the end of the single player mode is determined by the player's average... with fewer points the game would end against Yamazaki, but with a higher score they would face one of the Jin twins, or possibly both. Overall, Fatal Fury 3 was simply the best presentation of the series to date.
