The player controls a hovercraft as it ascends a mountain range with the goal of reaching a fortress at its summit. Each screen is part of the roadbed, which is protected by three waves of guards. These guardian waves are made up of Doom Reavers first, then Tarantulas, and finally Ghouls. Each wave descends down the road towards a player who must be eliminated before the next wave descends. Contact with enemies or Spikers that are randomly released from the Doom of Doom will result in death.
The player's own fire has the ability to ricochet off the walls of the roadway. This not only has the advantage of creating angles that the player can destroy opponents without allowing them to return fire, but can also be a disadvantage due to the shot's ability to return and destroy the player's ship.
After three waves, the player is allowed to move up the screen and move on to the next roadway. Each road has the same enemies, although their number increases. From the second roadway comes the Warbirds, which fly over the entire mountain and can shoot at the player on the third roadway.
After the three roads have been completed, the player encounters the Mystic Hurler, who is protecting the fortress itself. Mystic Hurler throws the Spikers, who split into two. It takes six hits to defeat him before the player starts going down the mountain again.
- Fortress Narzord was not released in Japan for the Bandai version of the Vectrex Kousokusen.
- There is a cheat that gives the player unlimited lives. When you fight the Mystic Hurler in the player's past life, the Hurler must be hit five times, then the last shot must be timed so that both the player and the Hurler die at the same time.
