Windjammers (known as Flying Power Disc in Japan) is an action sports game developed and released by Data East for arcades (on Neo Geo MVS hardware) on February 17, 1994. A unique sport based on a combination of air hockey and tennis, Windjammers two players collide on a court (with a low net in the middle) attempting to throw a single throwing disc past each other into a designated goal area without allowing the other player to do the same. Players select characters from different nationalities, each with unique statistics and special abilities. There are two main moves: the normal throw and the punch. By using quarter circle and half circle motions, you can also add an effect to the throw such as curves and banks. To catch difficult discs, you can slide to move faster. Slides have a cooldown, so sliding in the wrong direction is very risky. Each player has a powerful signature roll. To perform these special moves, you must stand where the paddle disc will land or pop out and enhance your throw by mashing or holding the throw button. The player can open the disc by pressing the capture button at the right time. These moves can be countered, but if received too far back, they will knock the opponent into the net. Slower characters are less likely to be knocked back. There are six characters to choose from, with specific abilities and their own court to suit their skills. A singles game consists of short sets of thirty seconds or the first person to score 15 or more points. The games end with the first player to score two victories.
