The main motto of the game was "War has never been so much fun" (Eng. War has never been so much fun). A second part of the game was also released, which was much more difficult than the first. A total of 5 parts of the game were released on the Amiga: Cannon Fodder, Cannon Fodder 2, Cannon Fodder 2: Alien Levels, Cannon Fodder 2: Not Very Festive, and Cannon Fodder+. The game is divided into a number of missions, which are in turn divided into phases.

A remake of the game was released for the Atari Jaguar in 1994. Unlike the Atari Lynx version, it was possible to change the color of the player's car and weather conditions. The Checkered Flag game supports up to 6 players. There were also plans to release a sequel (Checkered Flag 2) for Jaguar, but the game was never released. A Game Boy Advance version of the game was planned for release in 2005 by Destination Software, but was cancelled.

The game has several modes: single race, tag, etc. Players can choose different locations in which to race: the Wild West, San Francisco, etc. To advance to the next level, the player must complete the race or collect Power Balls in the game area. The game also features a two-player mode. As with many other 3D Jaguar games, the game has little to no textures.

The game is a 3D shooter. The player pilots a spacecraft in a third-person perspective. The game has five levels, each of which the player can explore several planets. There is a boss at the end of the level. The goal of the player is to capture the lost capsules scattered across different worlds.
